The first part of the course looks at the arrival of Vietnamese “Marxism”, the relationship between “Marxism” and the formation of national identity, the development of the Vietnamese communist movement, the August Revolution of 1945, and social revolutionary change in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam from 1945 to 1975. The second part covers the period from 1975 to the present, examining the reunification of Vietnam, crisis, the process of socialist reform, and issues related to the rebuilding of post-socialist political institutions. Theoretical issues under consideration include: the interaction between traditional Vietnamese political thinking and modern political concepts; the transformation of the Vietnamese party/state from the period of socialism to reform; cooperation and resistance in state-society relations; and forms of power and authority relations.
