Exploring Vietnamese History, Culture, and Society combines online and onsite learning. Its focus is to familiarize participants with key aspects of Vietnam’s history, culture, and society. The program consists of two educational components: introductory online materials accessible prior to departure, and an eight-day in-country visit with on-site presentations. The introductory online material includes pre-recorded videos and travel slides as well as selected readings that provide insightful perspectives on Vietnam. The eight-day in-country visit with on-site presentations supplements and enhances the on-line material. Both the online and onsite components of the program will cover the following aspects: • Geography, regions, and peoples of Vietnam. • Key themes in Vietnamese history from the pre-historic period to the first half of the 20th century. • Myths and racial identities. • Religions and popular beliefs. • Vietnamese village and folk culture. • Material cultures, with emphases on foods, performing arts, and music.
